The Spirit behind the James Humphrey Jr. Foundation
James Humphrey Jr. was a smart, kind, ambitious young man with a thirst for knowledge and unrelenting drive to be successful and make the world a better place. He loved his family and always strived to make them proud. He was a high achieving gifted and talented student who aspired to be a judge. He played trumpet in the high school band and loved martial arts. He was driven to attend one of the top five colleges and universities in the United States despite coming from a family without the means to support that dream. Despite those financial challenges, he was accepted to Duke University on an engineering scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He had worked so hard, overcoming the challenge of moving far away from home, living on his own for the first time, while maintaining his grades in a highly competitive academic environment, with very little support. Despite all he had accomplished, his drive to achieve more would not let him rest. Soon after graduating from Duke University, he applied and was accepted to an engineering master's program at the University of Massachusetts. While there, he suffered a severe mental health crisis which resulted in his untimely death after returning home to Arkansas at the age of 26.
His sister, Tori Humphrey Collier founded the James Humphrey Jr. Foundation with him in mind, asking the question, "What would have helped my brother be successful?" Through careful research, the answer to this question was discovered. The JHJ M4 combines a mission driven action plan, mentorship, mental health therapeutic counseling, and monetary tuition support as an all-inclusive program infused with strength-based wrap-around care service and support.
-
The M4 program provides therapeutic counseling to participating students throughout their undergraduate years. The therapy sessions provide participating students with the mental health support they need to navigate the challenges of college and the emotions and mental stress that comes with it.
-
The M4 program provides students with access to professional mentors throughout their participation in the program. These mentors guide students to create a mission-driven, student centered, goal-based action plan they can use to navigate their college career and to achieve their post graduate goals.
-
The M4 program also provides participating students with access to emergency tuition support based on the student's financial loss or need each year based on available program funding.
JHJ Foundation provides these supports to participating students of the M4 program free of charge, removing the burden of searching for compassionate providers and the financial challenge of paying for them, allowing college youth to focus on being the very best student they can be. The JHJ Foundation believes the M4 program is the answer to the question James Junior's sister posed years ago after the loss of her brother.
The JHJ M4 program is currently under pilot study with cooperative colleges and universities in Arkansas and Oklahoma. With your financial support and collaborative community involvement, we can expand this program to reach more students in colleges and universities across the country.
